There are incidences of pick pocketing, petty theft and muggings in the tourist areas of Kazakhstan, and though these incidences are not common, preventative measures are advised. Travellers are also warned to be wary of a number of scams, such as the ‘missing wallet’, the fake policeman or a false ‘meet and greet’ at the airport – use common sense, always ask for official identification and don’t simply hand over a wallet to a random person in the street! Other than this, there are no major safety concerns in Kazakhstan. Cholera is a problem in Kazakhstan, and a doctor’s advice should be sought before travelling to the country – sometimes vaccination is advised. Water used for drinking, making ice cubes or brushing teeth should first be sterilised in some manner. Fruit should be peeled before consumption and vegetables should be cooked. Meat should only be eaten well-cooked and hot. Dairy products are considered safe for consumption.
